Ian Thomas was personal assistant to Norman Hartnell from 1953 -1970 before opening his own design business then becoming designer/ couturier to the Queen for twenty years.

The dress is made from blue and white striped silk organza in a nod to a 1920s flapper style which had a resurgence in the early 1980s.
The attention to detail is exquisite, lots of hand sewn finnishes.
the dress is lined internally through the body and skirt, the sleeves are unlined.
There are small shoulder pads in the shoulders for a soft structure.
long sleeves in sections finish with buttoned cuff.
There is an internal zipper in the lining through the back
The chiffon closses with covered buttons with loop closures.
The dropped waist skirt is pleated to the mid calf.
