Late 1930s early 1940s
The Marcus label was founded by brothers Walter and Otto Marcus in North west Germany. In 1939 the brothers fled Germany due to persecution and successfully secured permits to live and work in London.
They founded a dressmaking and milnery business in Wells st W1. They then went on to set up in Hawick due to disruption in London during the blitz.
The company was part of London Model House Group, the predecessor of the British Fashion Council. The Marcus label ( couture) Marcusa (ready to wear)
Within a few years W & 0 Marcus was considered to be one of the top ten fashion houses in London.
Very few pieces of the Marcus label exist.
Stunningly constructed dress.
Silk fabric in bold swirls and jewel details.
There are so many unexpected details in this dress it is so interesting.
Starting at the top.
The shoulders are curved with pads.
The sleeves are ruched in waves, the sleeve seam is piped.
The back yoke is also ruched and gathered with a curved piped edge detail.
The neckline has a piped edge and a triple stitched possibly string filled detail.
The covered buttons open to the waist band
the top of the dress is fully lined in a fine cresm silk.
A stiffened and multi stitched (string filled) wonderful peplum sits at the waist.
The skirt is a full circle that has been constructed in 2 pieces with additional pieces added at the hemline to create a perfect curve.
Most of the construction of this amazing dress is hand stitched
